How to switch business energy supplier and save money
The definitive UK guide to switching business gas and electricity — how the process works, what documents you need, and how to compare and switch business electricity and gas suppliers without a single day's disruption.
Why switching business energy is easier than you think
Under Ofgem's rules, switching business energy supplier is designed to be seamless: your supply keeps flowing on the same wires and pipes, the meter stays where it is, and only the company billing you changes. There's no engineer visit, no downtime and no risk of losing supply mid-switch.
Step 1 — Know your renewal window
Every business energy contract has a renewal window — typically 1-6 months before the end date — during which you can lock in new rates. Miss it and you'll roll onto expensive out-of-contract rates. Set a reminder in your calendar the day you sign a new contract, or let us track it for you.
Step 2 — Gather what you need
- A recent gas and/or electricity bill
- Your MPAN (electricity) and MPRN (gas)
- Current supplier name and contract end date
- Annual usage in kWh (or last 12 months of bills)
- Your business bank details for direct debit setup
Step 3 — Compare and switch business gas & electricity suppliers
Get a whole-of-panel quote (that's what we do), agree the tariff and contract length you want, and sign the letter of authority that gives us permission to serve notice on your old supplier. Everything else is our problem.
Step 4 — Notice period & transfer
Your new supplier notifies your old one, agrees a transfer date and organises the final meter reads. The full process typically takes 4-6 weeks. You keep paying your old supplier as normal until the switch completes.
Step 5 — Final bill
Your old supplier issues a final bill within around six weeks of the switch, based on the meter reads taken at changeover. Any credit is refunded to your business bank account and any outstanding balance is billed as normal.
Common questions about switching
The FAQs below cover the questions we hear most often — from mid-contract switches to what happens if you've missed your renewal date entirely.
Switching business energy — FAQs
Will switching business energy supplier cause any disruption?
No — your supply is identical because the energy still comes through the same network. Only the company billing you changes. There's no engineer visit and no downtime.
How much notice do I need to give my current supplier?
This varies by contract, but Ofgem's rules mean most micro-businesses can give notice up to 60 days before contract end. Larger businesses often have specific renewal windows written into the contract — we'll check yours.
Can I switch if I'm in the middle of a contract?
You generally can't switch mid-contract without paying termination fees, but you can agree a new contract now to start when your current one ends. This is called 'future dating' and is the best way to lock in low rates before your current deal runs out.
What happens to my old supplier's final bill?
Your old supplier will issue a final bill within around six weeks of the switch date, based on the final meter reads submitted at changeover. Any credit is refunded and any outstanding balance is billed as normal.
